Varna
Definition
‘Colour, form, appearance’ — the four estates of Indian society (brahmanas, kshatriyas, vaishyas, shudras); the first three are ‘twice-born’ and free, the shudras are not initiated into the Vedas; each varna is subdivided into jatis (castes) and gotras (lineages).
