Upanayana
Definition
The central rite of studentship through which the boy receives a second, spiritual birth into eternity, is initiated as a student of the Vedas and receives the sacred thread (upavita); ‘father and mother give birth only to the body’, the teacher gives birth through the knowledge of the Vedas.
