Inner Warfare

Definition

The ‘united kingdom’ represents the soul in its God-intended state; sin divides it so that the passions (the idolatrous ‘North’) war against the spirit (the faithful ‘South’ guarded by grace). The spiritual life is the struggle to let the ‘Jerusalem’ of the heart, where Christ the King reigns, subdue and convert the rebellious ‘northern kingdoms’ of the passions.
