Akathist

Definition

‘Non-sitting hymn’ — a poem close to the ancient kontakion but with 12 ikoi and 12 kontakia alternating; the ikoi end with the refrain of the first kontakion and the other kontakia with ‘Alleluia’. The only akathist in the Typicon is that to the Mother of God
