Definition
The Church-tradition teaching on the posthumous ‘trials’ of the soul, most fully set out in St. Cyril of Alexandria’s ‘On the Departure of the Soul’ and the ‘Journey Through the Aerial Toll-Houses’ of Blessed Theodora. Not dogmatized; not connected with satisfaction to God; its main purpose is the self-knowledge of the individual, and its imagery must be read in a spiritual-moral sense.
