Eunomian Heresy
Definition
Eunomius’ teaching that the essence of a thing is contained in its ‘ontological’ name; such substance-names are more or less the thing’s energy and give objective knowledge of its essence, whereas concepts ‘by design’ only conditionally designate. Hence knowing God’s true name — ‘Unborn’ (ἀγέννητος) — means knowing His essence, making the divine essence comprehensible to man.
