Atman

Definition

That which abides within a being as the ‘particle’ of Brahman in man; not a personality or an ‘I’, but the true nature of man, distinct from mind, memory, senses, perception and mood — unborn, undying, attributeless. The Atma Upanishad distinguishes the outer atman (body), the inner atman (mind and senses) and the highest atman, using the shakha-chandra-nyaya (‘branch and moon’) method.
