1 Cor 24-5
Definition
Contrary to Protestant teaching (hierarchy as human convenience, ministers chosen by the people, ordination as a mere outward sign), Orthodoxy holds that hierarchical ministry is established by the Lord (Eph. 4:11-12), that priesthood presupposes a calling from above (Jn. 15:16; Heb. 5:4), and that ordination communicates the gifts of the Holy Spirit distinguishing clergy from laity.
